At a very, very low point in my life, I was asked by two mentors of mine from the University of Hawaii at Manoa to embark on a project to write the biography of the late U.S. Congressman K. Mark Takai. What started as a project became a personal obsession to document the life story of a remarkable journey of a dedicated public servant whose legacy was that of a person who went beyond the range and limits of his tragically shortened life. I personally knew Mark as a Leeward Community College student intern and as legislative aide at the Hawaii State Capitol. Mark had a passion to help others and especially me through my own challenges and obstacles as a college student and single mother. Mark had an unwavering commitment to service, able to overcome all difficulties and perseverance in the face of adversity, and his enduring advocacy for veterans’ healthcare issues despite his own battle with pancreatic cancer. His struggle with personal health issues serves as an inspirational narrative to this story. By documenting his achievements, personal battles, and the lasting impact of his work I hope whoever reads his biography would not only remember the person he was, but will also inspire future generations, while highlighting his determination, dedication and compassion in the face of life’s toughest challenges.
